I just got Volume I of the Columbia Accident Investigation Board’s report.
This should make some fun weekend reading. It’s surprisingly readable from the skim I just made through it–I figured it would be snore-inducing.
What will interest me is their commentary on NASA’s culture and the problems that it causes. I want to see if I agree with their analysis.
People always forget that spaceflight is inherently risky and that, unfortunately, we’re going to lose some crew from time to time. Should we work to minimize that? Absolutely. But no level of funding will ever make it 100% risk-free.
